Our Generation - Current Projects

Delabole Wind Farm

The construction of Delabole Wind Farm was completed or ‘commissioned’ in 1991 and it was  began generating and exporting electricity the same year, making it the UK’s first commercial wind farm. The project was the brainchild of the Edward’s, a farming family from Delabole. In 2002, Good Energy bought Delabole wind farm from the Edwards to provide a large slice of the electricity needed to supply its customers. The Edwards are still closely involved and Martin Edwards sits on the board of the Good Energy Group and manages the operation and maintenance (O&M) of Delabole Wind Farm.

There are ten, 400kW Vestas wind turbines installed at Delabole. The 4MW site reliably provides 10,000MWh of electricity each year, enough to power the homes of 3000 Good Energy customers - approximately 7% of our total customer demand.

The operation life of a wind turbine is in the region of 20-25 years. Delabole wind farm is approaching the end of its life. Our plans are to make sure that it remains a wind farm in years to come and this is why we intend to Repower Delabole.

Bro Dyfi

In September 2005, Good Energy Generation made an investment in a Bro Dyfi Community Renewables (BDCR) project in Machynlleth, North Wales. The project involved decommissioning an existing turbine that was an research and development system and installing a refurbished 500kW Nordank wind turbine. The funds required to deliver the project were raised through a share offer of which Good Energy purchased the maximum amount.

The decommissioning and construction work was undertaken in 2006. The turbine has been successfully installed but, being a refurbished turbine there are some technical issues that need to be unpicked.  It is expected that the outstanding issues will be resolved in the turbine commissioned and generating electricity in 2009.
