Organic matter such as plants, animals and animal waste is all carbon based and can be used as fuel. This energy can then be converted into heat or electricity through natural decomposition or combustion. Although carbon dioxide is released when the biomass is burnt or decomposes, it is equivalent to the carbon dioxide absorbed by the plant during growth and is therefore generally classed as ‘carbon neutral’.
